Today, the European Commission presented its new strategy to help Europe’s industry lead the twin transitions towards climate neutrality and digital leadership. The strategy acknowledges the need for a more strategic approach to renewable energy industries, proposing the creation of Alliances on Low-Carbon Industries, the creation of a European Innovation Council, and the launch of an Industrial Forum in September 2020, open to industrial stakeholders. The Forum will investigate the risks and needs of different industrial ecosystems and help to develop a dedicated industrial toolbox.
Commenting on the Commission’s Communication, ‘A New Industrial Strategy for Europe’, Walburga Hemetsberger, CEO of SolarPower Europe, said: “This is an encouraging development from the European Commission. The strategy launched today provides a promising starting point, reflecting the need to intensify the cooperation between European Institutions and renewable industries, to develop a concrete ‘Industrial Toolbox’ for the solar sector. Indeed, the European solar PV industry has a crucial role to play in successfully achieving a climate-neutral Europe, creating jobs and ensuring security of supply along the way.”
Aurélie Beauvais, Policy Director of SolarPower Europe, said “After intensive engagement on industrial strategy, which included the backing of 25 major European renewables associations, and research and national solar associations, it is positive that the Commission recognises the need for a more strategic approach to renewable energy industries. SolarPower Europe is ready to support the activities of the upcoming Industrial Forum and work with its members to deliver concrete proposals for a comprehensive solar industrial strategy.”
The Commission Communication on a New Industrial Strategy for Europe will next be discussed by the European Parliament.
